Kitchens, Hill Streets and 1950s Piping

Three jobs come up here that say something about the city:

• A restaurant adding a wok range or fryer — high-output cooking equipment needs more gas than the line that fed the old equipment may be able to carry. We size the piping for the full kitchen and add or enlarge a run where needed, tested before the equipment is lit.

• A 1950s house with a leak at an appliance connection — a range, dryer or water heater connector that has aged out, or a shutoff that no longer closes. We replace the connection and the valve and test the line it sits on. If the fault is inside the appliance, we say so.

• A long run on one of the hill streets — on a sloping lot the line from the meter to the house, or on to a patio, can be long and partly above ground. Exposed steel rusts; we replace corroded sections and support the new pipe properly.

Who issues gas piping permits in Monterey Park?

The city’s Building & Safety Division, at its permit counter in City Hall on West Newmark Avenue. Gas piping has its own lines on the city’s plumbing permit schedule, so new lines and added outlets are permitted and inspected. We can file for the permit, which means an administrative fee of ours over and above the city’s, or the owner can file. The choice is yours, and we explain it when we quote.

We are adding kitchen equipment. Will the existing gas line cope?

Sometimes, and it is worth knowing before the equipment arrives. Every appliance has a rated gas demand; the total has to be within what the pipe’s size and length can deliver. If the line falls short, burners run weak when everything is on at once. We do that calculation on site and tell you whether the line stays, grows or needs a second run.
