Signs You Need Water Heater Repair

A heater will usually give you a few clues before it fails:

• Lukewarm water, or hot water that runs out faster than it used to

• Rumbling, popping or banging from the tank — sediment being heated from underneath

• Water pooling at the base, or rust streaks on the tank

• A pilot light that will not stay lit, or a breaker that keeps tripping

• Rusty or foul-smelling hot water

Repair or replace — how do we decide?

Age, condition and cost. A heater under eight years old with a failed element, thermocouple or valve is a repair. One past ten, with sediment it has carried for years or a tank that has started to leak, is a replacement, because a leaking tank cannot be repaired and the money spent on a failing one is gone. Is tankless worth it in Torrance?
